A Valentine's To Remember

Yesterday was kinda special to me for only one reason(my husband and I don't do anything!)because I went to see my Grandma Ella Mae in the nursing home. For those of you that don't know her(my Barn's named after her)-she's my mom's mom and I've been close to her all of my life.

She's always done special things for me-helped me make my junior prom dress-and then helped me cut a hole where the belly button was-that kind of thing your mom would never do! She was in the nursing home a few months back and then was able to go home. Her strength and health had improved and we were hope full she would get to stay there. But then a couple of weeks ago she got dehydrated and went into the hospital. She ended up back in the nurshing home and became less of herself.

You know how it goes-the days go by and you just don't take time to go and see her-that's how it was when she was at home. Work, home were just more important(or so I thought). Her going into the nursing home has been a real wake up call for me. I see what's really important-the moments we take each day -to make someone else happy-it returns to you-in ways you can't imagine.

Yesterday was really hard for me-I just kept looking around, seeing all those old people and realizing how quickly life goes and we're all going to be there one day in some shape and form.

I had been teasing my Grandma for several months that with her short hair(my mom cuts it for her) that I was going to spike it and paint it pink. Last week-in her little, tiny voice she said-paint my hair pink. So I went prepared yesterday to make her Valentine's Day memorable!
I sprayed her hair(the pink is great on her!) and painted her nails a glittery pink! Here's to you Grandma!

  1. Oh Rebecca Sweetie...
Good Morning and thank you SO much for sharing your Sweet Grandma Ella Mae this morning. Oh I LOVE her pink hair and those little heart floppies, are so durn cute. Does she look precious or what? And her nails are SO beautiful. I know you absolutely made her day. She was Queen for the Day.

Yes, sadly so many families put their loved ones in the nursing homes, and never come back. When my MIL got Alzheimers, and we finally had to put her in the nursing home, even after she passed, DH and I took the kids every SUnday and still visited with so many that were the forgotten ones. They just wanted to be loved.

Moving out here to Phoenix, we haven't gotten back into visiting a nursing home, we have only talked about it, and you my precious friend have encourage me to take it back on again. We will have to find one that needs a little cheering up and adopt again.

Many hugs to you and SO much love, Sherry

  3. DEAR REBECCA,
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL POST FOR YOUR GRANDMA. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL WITH HER SOFT PINK HAIR AND THOSE POLISHED NAILS. I LOVE HER HEARTS HEAD BAND.
IN MY NURSING CAREER I WORKED IN A NURSING HOME AND IT IS VERY SAD. SOME NEVER EVER CHECK ON THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. YOU CAN TELL THE LOVE YOU HAVE FOR YOUR GRANDMA AND SHE NEEDED YOU AS MUCH AS YOU NEEDED HER YESTERDAY.
GOD'S MERCIES ARE NEW EVERY DAY.
I FEEL THE NEED TO TELL YOU TO BELIEVE IN YOUR SELF. YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL, SUCCESSFUL WOMAN WHO IS SO ADMIRED BY THOSE IN BLOG LAND, AND THOSE WHO LOVE THE ELLA MAES BARN GATHERINGS. I SURE HOPE TO COME ONE DAY.
    HAVE A SUGAR SWEET DAY
    SIMPLY DEBBIE

  4. SHE IS ADORABLE, YOUR RIGHT TIME GOES BY VERY FAST IN LIFE, GO SEE HER WHEN YOU HAVE TIME, BUT DON'T FEEL GUILTY IF YOU MISS A FEW TIMES. TRY AND PICK A DAY ONCE A WEEK, THAT IS CONVENIENT FOR YOU AND MAKE IT YOUR SPECIAL DAY FOR YOU AND ELLIE MAE. TAKE CARE, RIZZI
